Frequently asked questions with Precision Transmission Center in Daytona Beach Florida

Frequently Asked Auto Repair Questions

I’ve been told having your transmission flushed will cause seals to leak. Is this true?

No. Flushing is simply adding new fluid while the engine is running to circulate out the old fluid. The circulation and pressure is the same as in normal operation. New fluid is not going to cause the seals to leak. The most common reason there are leaks after a service is because the fluid level was low before the service was done and the transmission wasn’t inspected for leaks. Some seals will leak until the fluid gets about a quart low and stop leaking. Then when the fluid level is full after a service it can leak again.

I’ve been told having your transmission flushed will loosen particles in the transmission and cause problems. Is this true?

When doing a “Pan Off service” the pan is removed and inspected first. You are advised if there is excessive particles or material in the pan before completing the service. Assuming everything is in order the pan is left off and a new filter is installed. Once complete the pan is reinstalled and the transmission is filled with fluid. This is the best way to change the fluid in your transmission.

How often should I service my transmission?

This will vary depending on the kind of use and driving you do. The most common answer is to refer to the manufacturer’s recommended mileage. But if all the driving you do is short trips around town and very little freeway driving then the mileage should be less because there is more wear and tear per mile. Commercial vehicles that are used daily should be serviced once a year. An important part of maintaining your car is just having it checked. If it’s been more than two or three years, it’s a good idea to have it serviced to help you get the most life from your transmission.

I’ve been having trouble with my transmission. I’ve been told to have the fluid changed first and see if that helps. Should I do that?

The most important first step is to have a knowledgeable technician check the transmission. Having the fluid changed by a facility that doesn’t specialize in transmissions will likely just cost you money and extra time because you will have to take it somewhere else if the problem still exists, which it usually does. Not only will it require a visit to a second shop specializing in transmissions, it will be more difficult for the technician to diagnose the problem because someone else has worked on it. More time spent by the technician means more cost to you.

I see an oil leak. Can it wait to be repaired?

A leak from your transmission requires immediate attention. The transmission fluid is vital to keep your transmission running cool and to keep the internal parts lubricated and running smoothly. If you see more than a “softball” size puddle under your car, call us first before driving it any further. Catching and fixing a leak on your transmission can save a major repair.

My car won’t move. Do I need an overhaul?

If you put the car in gear and nothing happens, it may be a sign that there is a problem with your transmission. Because many transmissions are controlled by computer electronics it does not mean an overhaul or replacement of the transmission is necessary. The advantage of our transmission pre-check and computer diagnostic service to determine the nature of the problem and cost of the repairs.

My dash has a warning light on. What does it mean?

There is a wide variety of warning lights from the different manufacturers of vehicles. Even if the car seems to be driving normally, a warning light is not to be ignored. Your on-board computer system is telling you there is a problem in the system. Taking action and getting the problem diagnosed and repaired early can save you from a major repair.

How long will it take to get a diagnosis?

For most problems, we can have an answer for you in just a couple of hours. Some computer and electrical related issues can take more time to pinpoint. To help you save time, we can schedule your visit and have you on your way quickly.
