BMW offers several different types of automatic and manual transmissions. In recent years BMW has introduced the DCT and the SMG transmissions.

What is DCT

The Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) uses two computer controlled clutches to shift gears. The gears are split between 2 shafts inside the transmission. One input shaft contains the even-numbered gears and the other holds the odd-numbered gears and both input shafts are shifted by a computer controlled clutch. The transmission is able to quickly shift to the next gears because the opposite clutch is able to activate the shift without waiting for the other clutch to release.

The DCT does not have a torque converter, which is part of a traditional automatic transmission. Neither does it have a clutch pedal operated by the driver. For these reasons a DCT can offer advantages over both an automatic and manual transmission.

What is SMG Transmission

The Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) is similar to the DCT but there are major differences in the design and operation. The SMG is not a dual clutch transmission. Unlike the DCT there is only one main input shaft that the gears ride on.  The SMG works like a traditional manual transmission except the computer uses a hydraulic pump motor to operate the clutch and shifter. The system is very complex in the operation and programming procedures. A dedicated computer system with proprietary software from the manufacturer is required to program and update the system.

ZF Industries BMW Transmissions

Most of the automatic transmissions in BMW are manufactured by ZF Industries. The most recent models are 9 speed which gives a larger range of engine power and fuel efficiency.  Prior to 2004 the automatic transmissions had up to 5 speeds and the transmission control module was a stand-alone unit external to the transmission.  Beginning in 2004 transmissions had up to 6 speeds with the transmission control module inside the transmission. The internal transmission control module along with solenoids is called the mechatronic unit and is connected to the valve body.

The Internal Transmission Mechatronic (TCM) unit is one of the major differences between the earlier and later ZF transmissions.  The mechatronic unit is matched to all computer systems in the vehicle and is very sensitive with an ability to learn flow rates of each solenoid.  Even identical solenoids with the same part number can have different flow rates, which will affect the performance and interchangeability of parts in the transmission.

The torque converter has a lockup (also known as captive) piston inside designed to increase fuel efficiency.  While cruising at higher speeds, such a freeway driving, the lockup setting of the torque converter reduces cooler flow (the amount of transmission fluid circulating) because fewer internal components are actively operating which decreases fuel demand.  The lockup piston is a vital part of the torque converter operation and requires special tooling and machining to recondition during the rebuilding process.  Many torque converter companies do not have the correct equipment or training to address the lockup piston during the rebuilding process.  For this reason, “rebuilt” transmissions often fail within a short period of time.  It is imperative that a high quality re-manufactured torque converter be installed with every transmission overhaul.
